About Sierras Grandes Protected Area

The Sierras Grandes Protected Area is situated in the province of Córdoba, Argentina, and encompasses a prominent segment of the Sierra Grandes mountain range, which forms part of the larger Sierras de Córdoba. This protected landscape showcases steep ridges, quartzite peaks, deep valleys, and several rivers and waterfalls, with elevations reaching over 2,900 meters (Cerro Champaquí). The region’s geology includes ancient, eroded mountains that create dramatic landforms, attracting geologists and nature lovers alike.

Ecologically, the Sierras Grandes host a rich mosaic of environments, from shrubby Monte vegetation and high-elevation grasslands (puna) to Polylepis forests and native woodland areas. This diversity supports many endemic and rare wildlife species, including the Andean condor, mountain vizcachas, and the long-tailed pygmy owl. The area serves as an important refuge for threatened flora and fauna.

Historically, the Sierras Grandes have been home to indigenous Comechingón peoples and hold cultural significance with archaeological sites and rock art. The region today is prized for outdoor recreation, with popular activities including multi-day hiking to summit peaks like Cerro Champaquí, birdwatching, rock climbing, and camping.

Notable landmarks include the summit of Cerro Champaquí—Córdoba’s highest peak—hosting spectacular panoramic views, as well as natural landmarks such as the Arroyo Los Hornillos waterfalls and the Paso de las Tropas pathways. The area’s wild rivers and streams offer additional recreation like fishing and nature photography. The Sierras Grandes Protected Area attracts visitors seeking a combination of rugged wilderness, scenic vistas, and cultural heritage in a less developed environment.
